Alvin B. Phillips Obituary
Al Phillips, founder of Western Digital, died in Newport Beach surrounded by his loving family. He was 89. Phillips, an engineer, was an early pioneer in the semiconductor industry and the author of the text book "Transistor Engineering." He was instrumental in creating the Hoag Heart Institute serving as the initial Chairman of the Board. More recently, he was a board member of the University Synagogue in Irvine. He is survived by Sally Phillips, his beloved wife of 65 years and their four children and their spouses, nine grandchlldren, and five great-grandchildren. Al enjoyed traveling, was a die-hard Lakers and Dodgers fan, and an avid golfer, skier, sailer, and pickleballer. He will be dearly missed, and remembered for his intellect, passion, and deep pride for his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to University Synagogue of Irvine or Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute of Newport Beach.
