Alvin Miller M.D. Obituary
1926 - 2017 Dr. Alvin Miller loved music and his passion for newborn care and pediatrics was unparalleled. He passed away peacefully on December 12 in his sleep. A pediatrician for 60 years, he was a pioneer in the field of Neonatology and an award winning teacher of medical students. He traveled to Romania to help repair their broken medical system after communism and was awarded the Humanitarian Award from the University of Illinois for his work with physicians caring for newborns. Dr. Al, as he liked to be called, devoted decades of summers to Camp Hess Kramer as a camp physician. He loved those summers at camp and instilled "camp traditions" through our family. He never stopped learning, valued education and kept his mind sharp to the very end. He will be remembered and missed by the hundreds of "premies" that he saved and will always be "Dr Al" to everyone that knew him. As well, he took great pride in being a musician --- as a violinist since age 7 - which was a constant presence through his medical career and family life. He was a founding member of the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra and left a legacy of music through his children and grandchildren. At home, Al was most relaxed when in his "easy chair" in the back room listening to FM classical music. He was always witty, clever, creative and the consummate entertainer. He is survived by his sister Dorothy (Gene) and his children Ross (Eva), Judi Joyce (Randall), Donald (Amy), and Jonathan (Penny) Miller as well as his eight grandchildren, Jenna Crucitti (Dom), Sofie, Jamie, Eliot, Jason, Madison, Miriam, and Sarah.
