Anita Dunn Brandow Obituary
Anita Dunn Brandow, a centenarian native born Angelino, known affectionately as "Nini," passed away on Monday, June 24, at 102 ½ years old in South Pasadena. Anita is survived by her two sons, Gregg and Peter, her four grandchildren, Christopher, Haydon, Alexis, and Heather, and five great-grandchildren. Anita was born on Hill Street in present-day Chinatown on October 12, 1914 to Harry and Nora Dunn. Harry's grandfather, a German immigrant, was a stagecoach driver, who brought news of President Lincoln's assassination to his small hometown in Iowa in 1865. Nora, Anita's mother, traced her family to 17th century colonial Virginia and was related to such notable historical Americans as Frank and Jessie James. In her childhood years, Anita grew up in Los Angeles during World War I and the Great Depression, graduating from Manual Arts High School and earning a bachelor's degree in fine arts from UCLA in 1937. After a short career teaching art and interior design in high schools in Los Angeles, and designing the bedroom for Shirley Temple, Anita married George E. Brandow, a prominent structural engineer, who helped shape the Los Angeles skyline from the 1940s through the 1980s. George, who graduated from USC and was later a Trustee for the University, and Anita regularly supported and cheered on National Champion and Rose Bowl winning USC Trojan football teams for over fifty years. Anita's philanthropic passions for art led her to support and engage in docent work for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Huntington Library, the Sam Maloof Foundation, and the Harrison Macintosh Foundation. Specifically, she was interested in Japanese art, gardens, and craftsmanship. Anita was also an avid skier, backpacker, hiker, and tennis player. Funeral services for Anita are scheduled for 11 am on Tuesday, July 11, at Church of Our Saviour, 535 West Roses Road, San Gabriel, where Anita regularly attended church services.
