Anna Nazarian Obituary
December 28, 1926 - April 3, 2016 Anna Nazarian passed away peacefully on April 3, 2016 in Woodland Hills, California at the age of 89. Anna was born on December 28, 1926, in Euclid, Ohio to Dickran and Gousina Kilimian, Armenian immigrants and genocide survivors from Kayseri, Turkey. After the death of Anna's brother George while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces in World War II, the family moved to Pasadena, and Anna attended UCLA where she graduated with a B.A. in microbiology in 1950. Anna worked as a research associate in genetics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where she collaborated with Nobel Prize winner Dr. George Beadle, something she was always proud of. While at Caltech, Anna met her future husband Dr. Girair Nazarian, who was obtaining his PhD in chemistry. Anna and Girair married in 1952, and in 1960, Girair began working as a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at California State University, Northridge. The arrival of Anna and Girair's three daughters, Anahid, Elisa, and Nina, and son Richard Armen, brought great joy to their lives. Anna served the Armenian community throughout her life. As a founding member of St. Peter Armenian Church in Van Nuys, Anna served on the board of the Ladies Society, and was also active in the Armenian General Benevolent Union. From its inception, Anna was a member of the Valley Guild of the Ararat Home, serving on numerous boards and committees. Her dedication and tireless hard work for the Ararat Home was an inspiration to all knew her. Anna enjoyed life and always had a smile and friendly word for everyone she met, and often referred to herself as "just a midwestern girl." She is survived by her four children: Anahid, Elisa (Dominic), Nina (Kurt), Richard Armen (Wendy), and her nine cherished grandchildren: Jenny, Dominique, Alexander, and Gabriel Nigro, Drew, Julia, and Claire Medlin, and Nicholas and Natalie Nazarian. A memorial service will take place on Friday, April 15, 11:00 AM at St. Peter Armenian Church in Van Nuys. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in memory of Anna to the Valley Guild of the Ararat Home of Los Angeles or to the Ladies Society of St. Peter Armenian Church of Van Nuys.
