Annabelle Theresa Hiltz Obituary
December 16, 1928 - August 14, 2016 Annabelle Theresa ("Terry") Hiltz passed away on August 14, 2016, at Providence St. John's Medical Center after a long illness. Terry was born on December 16, 1928, in Remington, Indiana. Her parents, Walter and Marcelene Sigo, grew corn and raised livestock on their farm in Goodland, Indiana. Early on Terry decided that farm life was not her cup of tea. She attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and became a member of the sorority Alpha Xi Delta. She graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics and moved to Indianapolis where she used her considerable artistic talents in fashion illustration for department stores. But California with its promise of balmy weather and orange groves beckoned. She and three friends drove west in search of their future. Terry never looked back. While she enjoyed visits to Goodland in the summer, she settled permanently in Los Angeles where she earned a teaching credential under a program sponsored by the Ford Foundation. Terry met her husband, Edward F. Hiltz Jr., at a Purdue alumni party. The two were married in 1956. She earned a Master of Arts degree in special education at the University of Southern California while their five daughters were in elementary school. For over twenty years she taught at Clover Avenue Elementary School. Terry continued to find ways to incorporate artistic pursuits in her life. She taught art at St. Martin of Tours Elementary School and arts and crafts through L.A. Adult Education. Later in life one of her passions was making necklaces with beads she crafted meticulously by hand. Those whom she knew were recipients of this jewelry as well as beautiful handmade greeting cards for special days. Terry loved her family and friends, her Catholic faith, line dancing, "Sip and Sew" gatherings, Doc Martin, Agatha Christie mysteries, and taking walks. She will be missed terribly by all who knew her. Terry was followed in death weeks later by her husband of 60 years, Ed Hiltz, and is survived by her younger brothers, Richard and David Sigo; her five daughters, Yvonne Stuart (Bob), Lisa Bukaty (Ray), Angie Hiltz (Tim Ball), Jackie Hiltz (Todd Gehrke), and Jane Hiltz; grandchildren, Robert, John, Andrew, and Elizabeth Stuart, and Katharine, Maddi, and Buck Bukaty; and many nieces and nephews and their children. The family would like to extend deep gratitude to the fine staff at Providence St. John's Health Center for their compassion and professionalism in making the last days of Terry's life as comfortable as possible. A funeral Mass for Terry and Ed will be celebrated on October 1 at 10 AM at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 11967 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. Contributions in Terry's memory may be made to The Multiple System Atrophy Coalition, 9935-D Rea Road, #212, Charlotte, NC 28277.
