Arthur Jacob Ourieff Obituary
January 20, 1924 - July 4, 2017 Arthur Jacob Ourieff, MD, died July 4, 2017 at the age of 93, surrounded by his family. Arthur led a remarkable life as a father, physician, friend, mountaineer, skier, runner, foodie, and world traveler. Married for 66 years to the love of his life, Vernie Gusack Ourieff (deceased, 2013), they raised three children and were devoted grandparents to nine grandchildren. Born in Boston, Arthur attended Boston Latin School, spent two years at Amherst College, and was then admitted to Harvard Medical School. Following his internship in New York City and a residency in psychiatry in Chicago, he and Vernie moved to Los Angeles to raise their family. Arthur completed his psychoanalytic training at what is now called the New Center for Psychoanalysis. Arthur was a man of keen intelligence and great intellectual curiosity. A dedicated teacher, he served in many leadership roles at the Center, including Dean, and was honored as Teacher of the Year. He also served on the psychiatry faculty at UCLA and taught at USC Gould School of Law. As a physician and therapist, he was revered for his compassion, empathy, and deep understanding of his patients' inner lives. Devoted to his patients, he practiced until he was 92. Arthur and Vernie were a warm and generous couple and their door was always open. Vernie was a talented cook and friends gathered frequently in their home to share a good meal, seek their wise counsel, and engage in lively conversation. Arthur always loved a good debate! He was also an avid outdoorsman and mountaineer. The family spent every summer camping and backpacking and he trekked extensively throughout Nepal and Tibet. Setting the bar high, he ran his first marathon at age 59 and skied until he was 83! Arthur inspired us all with his generosity, vibrancy, and sense of adventure. We always felt he would live forever and indeed, in our hearts, he always will. He is survived by his three children, Bruce (and Connie) from Nipomo, CA, Martha Diamond (and David) from San Diego, CA, and Sally Ourieff (and Bruce Zetter) from Boston, MA; nine grandchildren, Rachel, Arielle, and Jared Ourieff, Jeffrey, Ben, and Henry Diamond, and Olivia, Gabriel, and Willis Zetter, all of whom were a source of joy and pride; his loving companion with whom he shared the last years of his life, Connie Corwin; his sister Audrey; nephews Terrence Tehranian and Lloyd Bennett; nieces Stephanie Bush and Hadas Alperovitz; and many beloved friends. There will be a celebration of Arthur's life on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 1:30 pm. Please contact Martha at [email protected] or 858-774-0182 for more information.
