Audrey Mae Dumas Obituary
September 20, 1914 - June 10, 2016 Born in New Orleans, Louisiana; Died in Culver City, CA at Age 101. Audrey was an elementary school teacher in the Long Beach School District for 26 years, from 1952 to 1978; most of which were spent at Lowell Elementary School. Audrey's passion was dance. She founded the first and, for years, the only dance school open to children of color in segregated New Orleans, in 1931. She operated the Audrey Dumas School of Dance, where she taught ballet, tap and acrobat. Her annual Dumas Dance Revues were renown in the black community in New Orleans. The school was closed in about 1949. She moved to Los Angeles in 1950. Audrey received her B.A. degree from Xavier University in New Orleans; and her M.A. from Columbia University in New York. She was the daughter of Frederick Joseph Dumas, Sr. and Letitia Leona (Duvernay) Dumas. She never married. She was predeceased by her brother, Frederick Joseph Dumas (Jr.), in 2008, and leaves behind her sister-in-law, Annette Montegut Dumas, and her nieces, nephews, her grand-nieces and nephews, and thousands of former students whose lives she enriched. Funeral services were private.
