Barbara Jean Cornell Obituary
July 31, 1925 - September 7, 2016 It was a wonderful life. Born Barbara Pell in Los Angeles, California, died peacefully at home in Pasadena at age 91, after a short illness. Daughter of Fred, a fire captain, and Donna, a homemaker, the youngest of three beautiful sisters. Sisters Mary and Martha predecease her. Raised in Eagle Rock and Pasadena, Barbara graduated from Occidental College where she met her beloved Neal as he returned to campus after WWII. She saw him through the Korean War as they began their marriage, 61 years of devotion, until Neal's death in 2009. Barbara remained in the much-loved family home as the last matriarch of our Baby Boom posse. Although an educator like her husband, she stayed at home, truly a gift to their daughters. With joy, Barbara was a gatherer of friends and family. Gifted seamstress, the best-dressed time of our lives. Wonderful cook, the best-fed time of our lives. The beautiful gardens created by her bionic green thumb. The entertaining, the holidays, the home where everyone wanted to be. Travels and road trips showed us our country inside and out. A childhood so happy, loving, supportive and safe. With lifelong friends Barbara continued her adventures. And she continued to give her cherished grandchildren what she had given her daughters. Quietly strong, outwardly positive, you would not detect that a brain tumor and partial vision loss at age 27, and Hodgkin's lymphoma decades later, had entered into her healthy 91 years. She is survived by daughters, Laura and Jennifer, and grandchildren, Tanner, Paige and Lilly, and many nieces and nephews. How grateful we are. How we will miss her. The Greatest Generation has lost one of its best.
