Beatrice Chankin Weisberg Obituary
August 1, 1926 - May 7, 2017 Beatrice (Bea) Chankin Weisberg, 90, died in Los Angeles. Bea, daughter of Bertha (Beila) and Edward (Yisrael) Bloom, was born in Chicago, IL and received her BA and MA from the University of Chicago. Bea spent her professional life in the Los Angeles Jewish community as an early childhood educator, largely at JCCs. Bea became a master teacher, school director, consultant at the Bureau of Jewish Education, lecturer at the University of Judaism, and mentor to countless professional educators. Through these efforts, she touched thousands of children, parents, and teachers and was recognized by multiple awards as a trailblazer. Bea was also an indefatigable advocate for Labor Zionism and for Habonim. At the time of her death she still served as the Executive Director of Ameinu of Los Angeles. She influenced campers, young people making Aliyah, and those devoted to a vision of an Israel rooted in progressive values. Bea was also a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother remembered by her family for her love, nurture, and guidance. Bea was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bernie Weisberg (z"l). She is survived by five children, Deborah Chankin (David Gould), Daavid Nitzan, Miriam Chankin, Aaron Chankin (Anna Kventsel), and Benjie Chankin (Marcia Baran Chankin), nine grandchildren Sarah, D'ror, and Yona Chankin-Gould, Noah and Rachel Puleo-Chankin, Eliya Swarttz, Lihi Kapach, and Yishai and Ayala Chankin, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Mt Sinai Memorial Park Hollywood Hills on Thursday May 11 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your choice of charity to honor Bea's memory.
