Rabbi Ben Zion Bergman

Obituary Condolences

Rabbi Ben Zion Bergman passed away peacefully on June 22, 2015, surrounded by his loving wife, son and daughter. He will be missed by many in the Jewish community. He was treasured by his friends and family for his loving kindness and sense of humor, as well as being both respected and revered by his colleagues for his wisdom and breadth of knowledge of Jewish Law. After graduating from CCNY with a degree in Civil Engineering, he enrolled in the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he was ordained in 1948. After leading congregations in Sierra Madre, Burbank and Encino California, he decided to pursue a more scholarly path and became the Dean of Students at the University of Judaism. Not content to only be the acknowledged expert in Jewish law, he also attended a local Law School, received a Juris Doctor degree, was subsequently admitted to the California Bar and also held the position of Adjunct Professor at Loyola Law School. The accomplishments and awards that he received throughout the course of his life are far too many to mention. To name only a few, he was instrumental in the early establishment of many major Jewish institutions, including the University of Judaism, the Beit Din of the Western States Region of the Rabbinical assembly and was a founding member of the Joint Beit Din of the Conservative Movement. The list goes on and on. He is survived by Bella, his wife of 69 years, his children Aviva and Avi, his daughter-in-law Nancy, and his most beloved granddaughter Alexa. Services are Today (Thursday) at 12:30 p.m. at Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries - Hollywood Hills, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, California 90068.
