Bernice Pauline Bonitz Obituary
January 5, 1928 - January 28, 2018 Beloved wife, mother and wonderful friend, Bernice Pauline Bonitz passed away from kidney failure after a long struggle. Bernice was born in Highbridge, Wisconsin, and grew up on a farm, one of eight siblings. She actually did walk a mile through snow to get to school! She played the clarinet in school and was an excellent athlete. After graduating from Ashland High School, Bernice worked as a typist for the Army at Fort Sheridan outside Chicago. Later she worked as a telephone operator at Bell Telephone in Ashland. She married George O. Bonitz, on June 12, 1948. They moved to California in 1956. In 1963, the family moved to Taiwan when George received another career opportunity. While living there, Bernice had opportunities to travel. She traveled to Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, and Japan. She was a member of an International Women's Club, which sponsored events and bazaars and particularly enjoyed hosting mahjong groups. Bernice could dress for an elegant twelve course Chinese dinner in the evening, after a day's long hike with her children in the tropical mountain hills. In 1968, the family returned to California and settled in Northridge. Through Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, she was able to pursue her volunteer interests, such as helping with the Food Pantry and the Lutheran High School Thrift Store. She also enjoyed pricing items for the church's yard sale. Bernice was an accomplished artist. Her specialty was creating beautiful landscapes and still life paintings. She was a master Ikebana flower arranger, a skilled baker and was renown for her lemon meringue pie and Christmas cookies. Bernice and George traveled the world. "Going to China and maybe Siam," as the song goes, was a reality for Bernice. In addition to the previous countries she visited, she also traveled to the Philippines, Germany, England, Mexico City and Mainland China, where she walked on the Great Wall. They also took a trip through the Panama Canal. Bernice was energetic and always gave back. Motherhood seemed effortless for her and she truly enjoyed being a mother. She was gracious, loving, caring and spiritual, and never had an unkind word to say towards anyone. Her neighbors adored her and her affable personality was a joy to everyone she met. May our mother and her beautiful soul rest in peace. She is survived by her children: Jeffrey Bonitz, Marcia Bonitz, Robin Bonitz and Steven Bonitz, and his wife Dianne Bonitz, and grandson, Trevor Bonitz. Preceding her in death was her husband, George, who passed away on her birthday, January 5, 2018, after 69 years of marriage. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018, 12 noon at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 8520 Winnetka Avenue, Winnetka, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or to .
