Berte Rosenfeld Obituary
June 12, 1918 - April 19, 2017 Berte Rosenfeld passed away peacefully in her Palm Springs, California home on April 19, 2017, at the age of 98. A first generation Jewish American, Berte was born Berthe Rakoff in Philadelphia, PA in 1918 after her parents immigrated from Warsaw, Poland. From a young age, Berte worked alongside her mother and sister in the Star Dress Shop established by her father, a tailor, and together they were able to provide higher education for the three Rakoff boys. In her 20's, Berte married Gil Silver, with whom she had two children, Marc and Shelley. With the early and sudden death of her husband, Berte and the children made their way to Mar Vista, California to live with her sister's family, where she found employment in the burgeoning aerospace industry at Douglas Aircraft. Back on her feet, she returned east where, building on her experience in the family business, she achieved success as manager of the Charming Dress Shoppes. In the 60s Berte returned to the west coast for good, settling in Beverly Hills, California where she founded and operated "Picadilly", a high-end fashion boutique, for many years. She was a successful independent business woman in an era when that was not the norm. Bertie" - as she was affectionately known - reconnected by chance with Jules Rosenfeld, a childhood family friend, and they married in 1990. Together they retired to Palm Springs where they resided until his death in 2007. In spite of hardships, including the death of her younger brother in World War II and later the loss of her son, Berte's unfailingly good spirits were extraordinary and uplifting to all those around her. Her family was always the center of her life, and her dazzling smile and infectious laugh, her energy, and her upbeat attitude made her especially beloved. Berte is survived by daughter Rochelle "Shelley" Rubin (Robert "Beau" Rubin, d.); daughter-in-law Jo Silver (Marc Silver, d.); grandchildren: Gerri Tumblin (Michael Tumblin), Josh Silver (Jenny Silver), Erica Hammond (Kenneth Hammond), Cody Silver, and Reid Silver; 7 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and great and great-great nieces and nephews. Berte was predeceased by her husbands Gilbert Silver and Jules Rosenfeld, her son Marc Silver, and all 4 of her siblings: Abraham, Frank, and David Rakoff, and Sylvia "Sooky" Goldman. The funeral was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cathedral City, California on Sunday April 23.
