Betty Hain Lewin Obituary
Betty Hain Lewin, Ph.D., passed peacefully at home on February 23, 2017 in Santa Fe, NM. Born in 1921 to Harold and Bess Hain (founders of Hain Pure Food Company), Betty grew up in the Silver Lake area of L.A. and later resided in La Cañada with her husband Howard Lewin (1920-2006) until their move to Santa Fe in 1989. Betty attended Thomas Starr King Jr. High; John Marshall High School; Pomona College; the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.; Antioch West (M.A.); and Goddard College (Ph.D.). Betty gave birth to 6 children and had multiple careers: concert pianist, piano teacher, and psychotherapist. Betty deeply nurtured her human and animal family and friends; she was a profoundly gifted pianist who played daily, filling her home with Chopin and Brahms; she was a visual artist with an acute eye for color and symmetry; and she was a passionate political activist and voice for peace. Betty was the beloved mother of 5 surviving children who remain a close and connected family: Alan Lewin (Altadena, CA); Lee Lewin (Santa Fe, NM); Gary Lewin (Durango, CO); Robin Lewin (Los Angeles, CA); and Tracey Lewin (Pasadena, CA). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Betty touched the lives of many with her compassion, wisdom and grace. A celebration of her life will be held in the near future, please contact the family for further information.
