Betty Mellenthin Kuchel Obituary
March 13, 1918 - March 4, 2016 Betty Mellenthin Kuchel, widow of the late Senator Thomas H. Kuchel, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 4, 2016, at home in Los Angeles with friends and family by her side. Betty was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on March 13, 1918. Her family moved to Santa Ana, California when she was 6 months old. She attended UCLA and graduated from Colorado College where she was a member of Delta Gamma. On June 2, 1942 she married Thomas H. Kuchel. She and Tom lived in Washington, D.C., from 1952 through 1968 while he served as the U.S. Senator from California. She was active in the Spouses of the U. S. Senate and the Congressional Club of Washington, D.C. She was also a member of the Society of Sponsors for the U. S. Navy and christened the U.S.S. Ray, a nuclear attack submarine, on June 21, 1966. Tom and Betty moved back to Los Angeles in 1971 where Tom had an active law practice until 1981. Tom passed away in November 1994. Betty remained active as a member of the Bookworms Auxiliary of the Assistance League of Southern California. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at the Los Angeles Country Club where she was a member. She finally gave up golf at the age of 89 and moved to the bridge table with her friends. Betty is survived by her daughter, Karen Kuchel; two grandsons, Jason Smith and Peter Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Trevor Smith and Ryann Smith. She will be buried at a private family service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blind Children's Center of Los Angeles.
