Beverly Horowitz Obituary
March 24, 1923 - February 26, 2016 Beverly Horowitz passed away peacefully at the age of 92, surrounded by her loved ones. Her life was devoted to family and to public service. She was the beloved wife and widow of Ben Horowitz, and the mother of Zach and Jody. She became the "First Lady" of City of Hope during the 37 years her husband, Ben Horowitz, served as the the philanthropy's CEO. Born in Chicago, Illinois on March 24, 1923 Beverly was the only child of obstetrician Dr. Benjamin Lichtman and Lillian Korol. At 9 years old, Beverly moved with her mother to California where she attended Dorsey High School and then UCLA. In her early twenties, she opened several successful stores, but felt the calling of public service and joined the staff of City of Hope as its Regional Director under Sam Golter. It is there she met Ben Horowitz and they were married in 1952. Ben went on to serve as CEO of City of Hope during its most expansive and transformative chapter, and Beverly was truly his partner and soulmate during this period - and throughout their lives. With the birth of their two children, she committed herself to family life like a force of nature. She was PTA president, everyone's favorite chauffeur, cook, muse, and sounding board. She created a true home-away-from-home for all who were in her midst. She was a wonderful writer, a great droll wit, a sophisticated art collector, a politically astute thinker, and had an erudite appreciation for music and literature. Most importantly, she was someone who truly listened with her heart, and who dedicated herself to the betterment of others. We were all elevated by her presence in our lives. She is survived by her children Zach Horowitz and Jody Marsh, their spouses Barbara and Gary, and three grandchildren: Jennifer and Charlie Horowitz, and Zoey Marsh. Funeral services will be Sunday March 6th, at Mt Sinai Memorial Parks, Hollywood Hills (Tanach Chapel). In lieu of flowers, please send donations to City of Hope.
