Brian M. Moore Obituary
June 11, 1943 - December 23, 2017 Brian M. Moore, the former Deputy District Engineer of the Los Angeles District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, passed away on December 23, 2017. His distinguished career with the Corps spanned 44 years where he was responsible for numerous civil and military projects. Brian's long record of exemplary service, achievement, and leadership was nationally recognized as the 2013 recipient of the Distinguished Civilian Employee Award. Brian was born on June 11, 1943, in Greenfield, Massachusetts, to Ruth and Norman Moore. He grew up there and moved with his family to California in 1959 while still in high school. Brian went on to earn his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and his master's degree in water resources systems from Cornell University. Brian's lifetime career with the Corps of Engineers was briefly interrupted in 1968 when he was drafted into the Army. During his military service, he graduated from Officer Candidate School in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and was assigned to oversee the Charleston Army Depot in South Carolina. After his discharge as a 1st Lieutenant, Brian returned to the Corps' Los Angeles District where he held positions of increased technical and management responsibility, eventually being appointed as the most senior civilian leader in the District. After retirement, Brian stepped forward to volunteer as Board Chair of River LA (formerly the Los Angeles River Revitalization Corporation). He performed this significant civic service from November 2013 to October 2016. In addition to volunteering, Brian had many other interests, including golf, skiing, two-man beach volleyball, and weightlifting. Brian is survived by his wife Nancy (of 43 years), two brothers Norman Jr. and Jon, and his nieces and nephew. A memorial celebration of Brian's life will be held on January 11, 11:00 a.m., at On the Greens at Cypress, Golf and Conference Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Brian's name to the Saint John's Health Center Foundation - John Wayne Cancer Institute - Dr. Anton Bilchik, the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center - Dr. Heinz-Josef Lenz, or River LA.
