October 1, 1926 - October 4, 2015 Dr. Calvin Ezrin MD, FRCPC, FACP - beloved husband of his "beshert" Geraldine whom he married three times. First was in a Gilbert & Sullivan musical at the age of 14 followed by their official wedding at 19. Third was their 50th anniversary where they renewed their vows in the presence of nearest and dearest. Calvin graduated from University of Toronto Medical School in 1949 at the top of his class. He supported himself by playing bass with the Bobby Gimby Band. He made history as the first Jewish staff physician in the Department of Medicine at Toronto General Hospital. An esteemed Professor of both Medicine and Pathology at the University of Toronto, he did research on insulin under Dr. Charles Best and later defined the anatomy of the pituitary and was instrumental in the discovery of the prolactin cell and many other cells of the "Master Gland." Calvin moved to Southern California in 1976 and developed a thriving practice for the treatment of obesity and other endocrine disorders, retiring only this past October 2014. He was beloved by his patients - some of whom stayed with him for decades. He had unparalleled success in sustained weight loss using his theory of restorative sleep. He lectured all over the world, published and authored numerous papers, chapters and books for scientific and lay audiences. Beyond his academic and professional accomplishments, Calvin Ezrin was a one-of-a-kind family man. He is the father of eight children: Bob, Brian, Ronald, Cheryl Waters, Joanna Schauer, Michael (of beloved memory), Renana, and Judith Gamboa; has 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and is survived by his sister Roslyn Herst of Toronto and numerous extended family members and dear friends.
