Carol Elaine Levy

Obituary Condolences

March 5, 1947 - October 20, 2015 Carol Elaine Levy, Director of the Community Campaign for the Los Angeles Jewish Federation, died after a long, valiant battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Los Angeles to Herman and Eleanor Kretzer, she was married for 43 years to Rabbi Richard N. Levy, Rabbi Emeritus of the Synagogue of the Los Angeles campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. She was the mother of Sarah and Elizabeth Levy, mother-in-law of Connor Kalista and Chad Kenward, and grandmother of Elijah Kalista. A graduate of UCLA, an actor and a singer, she was a member of the South Coast Repertory Company, taking her major role in the musical Mother Earth to Broadway. Carol was director of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Jewish Congress, and the development director of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, where she also taught for ten years. Carol was an active layperson and board member with the Jewish Federation, through which she visited women refuseniks in the former Soviet Union and Ethiopian Jews in Addis Ababa. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor of the Jewish Communal Professionals of Southern California. Carol was deeply beloved throughout the Jewish community as an activist, mentor, and role model. Her resounding voice, boundless energy, and great wisdom will be sorely missed.
