Catherine Florence Snoke Obituary
August 26, 1923 - September 23, 2017 Catherine Florence Snoke, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister and friend passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in the early morning of Saturday, September 23, 2017, just three days' shy of her 94th birthday. A supremely dedicated elementary school teacher, she infused many young minds with a lifelong love of learning. She developed many innovative ideas that improved teaching methods, some of which were articulated in her published article for The Instructor magazine. Along with her best friend and fellow teacher, Nettie Wingerhoff, she wrote a comprehensive, yet unpublished book on the art of teaching. In later life, she collaborated with the artist and daughter Laura's mother-in-law, Betty Orrett, who illustrated a book of Catherine's children's short stories. Catherine was an avid adult learner, always curious, and continually challenged herself throughout her life to improve. She taught her own children to always be kind to others, to do their best, and excel in intellectual and creative pursuits. She provided an exemplary role model. A daughter of Italian immigrants, she was the first in her family to graduate from college with a degree in psychology from the University of Illinois. When confronted with her fear of swimming, she decided to build a pool. She learned and achieved high levels of skill in tennis, and took lessons in painting, skiing, dancing, and played classical piano as an adult. She demonstrated pride in her Italian heritage by preparing authentic Italian dishes and became known as an excellent cook of Italian cuisine. Her husband, John Snoke, a university professor of biochemistry, died prematurely in 1984 from a bicycle accident. Throughout their long and loving marriage, they enjoyed nature by experiencing many wonderful hiking trips and bicycling adventures together. Later in her life, she found companionship with Charles Stone, a psychiatrist with whom she shared years of joy. She will be greatly missed by her surviving family of two daughters, a son and their families: Laura Snoke and Ed Orrett; Deborah and Gregory Larson; John and Jeri Snoke, and their daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Michael Christoferson, and their son, Hunter; and her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Al Harris and their son, Scott. The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers for the companionship and skill they extended to Catherine, and LivHome for its exceptional support and services. Services will be held on Monday, October 2, 2017 at 11am at the Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills, California to honor her life and pay tribute to her loving and lasting memory.
