Cecile Bartman Obituary

April 13, 1920 - September 29, 2015 Cecile C. Bartman passed away at home in Los Angeles on Sept. 29; she was 95. Born in Chicago in 1920, she was a proud graduate of the Francis Parker School and the University of Chicago. She moved to Los Angeles in 1946 with her husband Fred A. Bartman (who died in 1990). She had a real interest in art, worked as a docent at LACMA for 17 years, and supported the museum generously. She also ran the bookstore at the Cedars Sinai gift shop, The Helping Hand, for many years. She was a supporter of the LA Public Library Foundation, establishing in 1998 in Vernon one of the first computer centers in a library in a low-income community. Kevin Starr, the state librarian at the time, attended the opening ceremony and took the idea to Bill Gates, whose foundation then gave $20 million to purchase computers, software, internet access and training for public libraries in under-served communities throughout California. More recently Mrs. Bartman contributed to the restoration of the sanctuary of the Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Her brother Bernard Citron predeceased her. She is survived by son John and daughter Judy and grandsons David and Michael. Funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Library Foundation of L.A., 630 W. 5th St., L.A. 90071, lfla.org/support-us.

Remembering Cecile with fondness today. I loved her stories of travel in Europe at 16 years old. She lived a fascinating life.

I had the pleasure of working with Cecile for many years, and enjoyed her company tremendously. Her love of art history, her astute observations and unique humor were evident in many of our conversations. She will be greatly missed.
