Charles P. Hoult Obituary
December 15, 1933 - November 23, 2016 Charles Hoult passed away at home within a month after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He is survived by his loving wife Janet, brother David, children Howard, Ellen, Lynne and Joi, grandchildren Sarah, Neda, Mike and Sam, great-grandchildren Jonathan and Ariana. He was pre-deceased by his sister Maude, daughter Elizabeth, son David and granddaughters Julia and Catherine. Charley was the rocket scientist in our family. He spent his entire career working with rockets. In 1958, he was initiated into the sounding rocket business as an Air Force 2nd Lt. assigned to Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory in Bedford, MA and continued his sounding rocket work until 1977 when he began working for the Aerospace Corp. and TRW (later part of Northrop Grumman) until his retirement in 2007. During these years he supported the Titan launch vehicle and various classified satellite and missile defense projects Starting in 2006 he returned to his first love, sounding rockets, by accepting an appointment as Mentor in the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Dept. at CSU Long Beach where he also served as an Adjunct Professor. During his career he participated in launches throughout the world from White Sands, NM, Cape Canaveral, FL and Vandenberg, CA to Ft. Churchill, Manitoba, Canada and Barreira do Inferno, Natal, Brazil. He was educated at MIT and UCLA. His website, Rocket Science and Technology (www.RSandT.com), offers open source software for anyone who seeks tools for amateur rocket design. His ashes will be distributed at sea and from a CSULB sounding rocket at the annual Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition in June. When the rocket hits apogee and the parachute is deployed, Charley's ashes will be scattered in the atmosphere. Memorial Services will be at Grace Lutheran Church, 4427 Overland Ave., Culver City, CA Saturday, December 17 at 11:00 am.
