Charles Pierson "Kicker" McKenney

1938 - 2015 Obituary Condolences
Charles Pierson McKenney July 14, 1938 - August 27, 2015 Charles "Kicker" McKenney passed away at home, loved and cherished by his family. He is survived by Betty, his wife of 45 years, and their children, Stephen (Maria), Brendan, and Sara Gillissie (Mike) and five beloved grandchildren. Charlie attended schools in Pasadena, graduated from Stanford University and then USC law school, and settled in Pasadena. Spurred by the demolition of a lovely 1920s office building to make way for a gas station, Charlie ran for and was elected to the then called Pasadena Board of City Directors. During his tenure (1972-78) he successfully advocated for preserving the open channel section of the lower Arroyo Seco under the Colorado Street bridge, for maintaining the elegant streetscape of South Orange Grove Blvd. by retaining both the historic street lights and the pattern of alternating magnolia and palm trees and for closing the Lower Arroyo Seco Natural Area to automobiles. He helped set the stage for Pasadena's revival. Twelve years ago Charlie and Betty took a three acre empty lot and built Arlington Garden. Friends, family and horticulture professionals contributed to the garden's creation, but Charlie and Betty were the Constant Gardeners in every sense of the phrase. This beautiful public garden is the culminating tribute to Charlie's life long devotion to Pasadena. Charlie's wit, humor, quiet wisdom and thoughtful intellect will be treasured and missed by his wide circle of family, friends and associates. The family thanks his friends and caregivers for their support during his illness. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena on September 16 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to "Arlington Garden in Pasadena," 295 Arlington Drive, Pasadena 91105.
