April 19, 1938 - May 30, 2016 Charles Robert Garrett, Sr., 78, died on Monday, May 30, 2016 at Kaiser Medical Center -Sunset following an intermittent battle with cancer. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 31 years, Valerie Lark Garrett; his son, Charles Garrett, Jr.; his daughter, Deirdra Garrett; his grandchildren Sydney Taylor Garrett and Christopher Charles Garrett; his sisters-in-law Vinita Lark Williams (Ken) and Vijaya Lark Richardson (Arthur); and many close friends. Born in Los Angeles on April 19, 1938, Charles was the third child of Ethel and Charlie Garrett. He was a resident of Leimert Park for the past three decades. Mr. Garrett graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and later attended Los Angeles Trade Technical College and earned his Bachelor's degree in school business management from Pepperdine University in 1978. Prior to college, he also served in the U.S. Air Force for two years. A retired public servant, Mr. Garrett honorably served the students of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) beginning in 1963 as a grounds worker and culminating as a deputy operations director with his retirement in 1998. He took great pride in his work for the District. In addition to his many professional assignments, he served as an adult education teacher, taught professional development classes and served as a coordinator to assist other employees in attaining career advancement. He truly relished the friends he made during his nearly 40 years with LAUSD as well as his contribution to the City of LA. Over the years, his expertise and reputation led him to active involvement in the California Association of School Business Officials as well as LAUSD Branch Operations Retiree Club. Mr. Garrett had a lifelong passion for jazz, sports, politics and travel having visited the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia with his wife Valerie. A proud father and grandfather, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Walter Jones and his sister Leola Williams. A devoted member of Second Baptist Church in L.A., funeral services will be held on June 11th at 11 AM at the Second Baptist Church, 2412 Griffith Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90011.
