Charlie and Bette Nedoff Obituary

Charles Robert Nedoff
November 11, 1922 - December 9, 2016

Elizabeth May Abbott Nedoff
July 07, 1925 - March 26, 2013

Married for over 41 years, the happiness Charlie and Bette shared is remembered by family and friends. Both were educators, well-loved by students and colleagues: Charlie, professor of Sociology at Orange Coast College for over 30 years, and Bette, teacher of English grammar and literature at Huntington Beach High School for 27 years. Together, they amassed a large collection of books which lined the walls of their small beach house. They enjoyed their retirement: traveling several times to Paris, London and Scotland, attending live jazz concerts at Disneyland and at the Hollywood Bowl, games at Dodger Stadium (along with a few post-game Tommy's Burgers), and afternoons at their favorite beach.

Charlie was born in Los Angeles to Sabaya and Michael Nedoff, joining his older sister, Katherine. He attended St. Brendan's School and Cathedral High School. He and his family were part of the large extended Turk family, which often gathered for savory Lebanese dinners at the family home on Manhattan Place. He joined the Army, serving in the 1505th AAF BU in WWII, and was on one of the last bombing missions in the Pacific. He recalled his war experiences as both harrowing and broadening. He was able to explore his love of jazz at several stateside postings, including trips to Chicago and St. Louis. After the war he attended LACC and then Stanford University, earning his B.A. in and M.A in Sociology. In addition to teaching at OCC, he taught at CSU Long Beach. His long teaching career included many students who became lifelong friends. After retirement Charlie enjoyed socializing with The Sunshine Boys each month at Sabatinos.

Bette was born Elizabeth May Abbott, in San Francisco to Willie May and John Abbott of Mill Valley. She attended Notre Dame des Victoires in San Francisco before graduating from El Monte High School. Her happiest days were in Chicago with her adoring father in Denver. She visited her maternal grandparents, Sadie and William W.G. Rockwell in South Charleston, W. Virginia. Later she lived with her mother and stepdad in Downey, California, close to her Uncle Wilbur Rockwell. During WWII, she supported the cause with factory work. As a young mother, she attended OCC, CSU Fullerton, and then CSU Long Beach earning a BA and MA in English. She was an accomplished gardener, known in their Balboa neighborhood for her beautiful garden, overflowing with herbs, tomatoes and beans.

Charlie is survived by his children Viki Rayburn (Rick), Terrie McLeod (John), and Judy Nedoff, grandchildren Jason Rayburn (Jessica), Jacob Rayburn, and Eleanor Rayburn, John Clark McLeod, and great-grandchild Connor Rayburn.

Bette is survived by her children Kenneth Dutro, Jr. (d. 2016), Susan Mantle, and James Dutro, grandchildren Dawn Linker and Amber Mantle, great-grandchildren Zsera Dear, Brianna Edgar, Jake Edgar, Olivia Edgar, and Carina Edgar, and great-great grandchildren Noah Linker, Lyla Dear, Abigail Dear, and Gatlin Dear.

Memorials can be made to the Orange Coast College Friends of the Library through the OCC Foundation online or contact Douglas Bennett at [email protected] or (714) 432-5126.
