Charlotte Joalyn SanChez Obituary

August 17, 1923 - November 30, 2015 During her 92 years, Charlotte Joalyn (Parchman) SanChez quietly yet fiercely demonstrated her love of family, faith and country. Her death amidst loved ones occurred during a brief hospitalization near her long-time home in Encino, CA. Born in rural Annona, TX, Charlotte was the third of Olin and Margaret (Harvey) Parchman's three daughters. After high school and Paris Jr. College, she joined the Navy WAVES in 1943 and attended basic training at Hunter College. She met Lt. Jay SanChez at an inter-service dance in 1944; on April 28, 1945, they wed in their dress uniforms. After the war, they settled in the growing San Fernando Valley and raised their 4 children. She was an irrepressible joiner who volunteered all her life. She served at polling places and as President of the Nestle Avenue PTA and the Encino Women's Club. She was a founding and active member of the Sherman Oaks United Methodist Church until her death. An avid bridge player and knitter, she loved to cook and give parties. Those passions led to her three decades as a caterer. Charlotte's love of preparing gifts of food for others was a great joy to her. Charlotte proudly supported and participated in veteran and WAVE groups. She lit her porch flag nightly and wore her signature red, white and blue. She mixed southern hospitality and California style to create a loving life of family and friends. Married 64 years when Jay died in 2009, Charlotte was buried beside him at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills while a Navy Honor Guard played taps. Three generations were all present. They are children Carmen SanChez, Michelle (Hank) Hurst, Joaquin (Sherry Shanabarger) SanChez and Rosanne SanChez; grandchildren Derek (Yvonne) Lantz, Damon (Amber) Lantz, Gregory (Jenna) Hurst, Michael Hurst and great-grandchildren Sophie, Maddie, Jack, Beau, Taylor and Mia. Charlotte's sisters Celestial Russell and Berniece Goff are pre-deceased. A Celebration of Life is planned for January 9, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at Sherman Oaks Methodist Church, 14401 Dickens Street, Sherman Oaks.
