Christopher Joseph Shaw Obituary
September 18, 1933 - September 9, 2015 Christopher (Chris) Joseph Shaw died Wednesday, September 9, at age 81. Chris, an amazingly talented individual, was responsible for many wonderful memories. He was born, September 18, 1933, in New York, the son of Loretta (Specht) Shaw, an actress, and Jedediah Flower Shaw, a theatrical producer. He was an avid photographer, a writer and journalist; a distinguished pioneer in the computer programming field, computer software expert and active member of prominent computer groups, including the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM); a builder of all sorts of objects; an artist and cartoonist; a youth soccer coach (for decades); he was great at cooking, enjoyed travel, read many books, technical journals and magazines each week; he was actively involved with his children and grandchildren. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Los Angeles, at age 16; then attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before being drafted into the United States Army; after training at Fort Ord, California, he was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, where he served as a cryptographer. After military service, he studied at Chouinard Art Institute, Los Angeles. He worked at the Rand Corporation and followed a group branching off to establish the System Development Corporation (SDC), where he started as a computer programmer for the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment System (SAGE), running on the AN/FSQ-7 computer. He also worked at Xerox Computer Services, Trillium (co-founder), Ashton-Tate, Kaselaan & D'Angelo, Quality Information Systems, and finally at KCI Computing. While at SDC, Chris authored the first manual for JOVIAL (Jules' Own Version of International Algebraic Language). In recent years, he was striving to enter a new career as a professional photographer; in early September, an exhibit of his Urban Ground series, plus professional albums he produced, was featured at a gallery in San Pedro. Chris is survived by daughter Gwendolyn Shaw, son-in-law David Lee, and grandchildren Melissa Lee, Michael Lee, and Matthew Lee; son Robert Shaw, daughter-in-law Pamella Shaw, and grandson Nathaniel Shaw; daughter Jennifer (Shaw) Hancock, son-in-law Michael Hancock, and grandson Zane Hancock; sister Jane Shaw; brother Tad Shaw, sister-in-law Theresa (Sabatello) Shaw, and family; sister-in-law Lana (Forman) Tuller and brother-in-law Ron Tuller, and family; brother-in-law Barry Forman; Joan Forman to whom he was previously married; numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins. A memorial will be held at 11:00 AM, Sun., Oct. 18, 2015 at Rice Mortuary, 5310 Torrance Blvd., Torrance CA.
