Clarence Bonn Obituary
November 26, 1917 - July 28, 2017 Clarence "Smiley" Bonn, age 97, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017, at his home in Gardena, CA. Clarence was born on November 26, 1919 in Mahnomen, Minnesota. He married Ruth Mattson, the love of his life, sharing 59 years together. Together they entertained family and friends in their Gardena home until her passing in 2002. He worked as a Postal Carrier for most of his life until his retirement in 1962 and was a very active member in the Gardena Elks Club and the VFW Post 3261. During WWII Clarence served as a Technical Sergeant in the Army Air Corps and was stationed at Wheeler Field, HI, the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. In 1954, Clarence and 10 other WWII veterans who survived the Pearl Harbor attack established the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, which quickly became a National Organization serving thousands of veterans and their families (pearlharborsurvivorsonline.org). Clarence was the last surviving Founding Member. Clarence was a happy-go-lucky man who always had a smile earning him the nickname "Smiley." His laughter and humor always made others smile too. His many family members and friends will always remember Smiley's sunny outlook on life and the laughter he brought into their lives. He will be greatly missed by all. Memorial services will be held on Monday, August 28th at the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey, CA. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation in his name to the Veterans organizations he supported: the Disabled Veterans of America and the American Legion.
