Colleen Mitchell Spidell Obituary
August 7, 1964 - December 5, 2017 Colleen Mitchell Spidell, brilliant light, champion dog rescuer, loving wife, daughter, and sister, went peacefully to the Lord on December 5th after fourteen years battling cancer. Born August 7, 1964, the third daughter of Louis and Dionne Mitchell of Altadena, CA, Colleen attended St. Elizabeth's parochial school, Alverno Heights Academy and USC, earning her BS in Business Administration in 1986. At USC Colleen was a stand-out beauty and Pi Beta Phi sorority sister, as well as Kappa Alpha Rose. After college she joined Kirtland & Ellis law firm, then went on to DirecTV, working there until 2003. Colleen met the love of her life, Eric Spidell of Redondo Beach at one of his famously awesome Halloween parties. Dressed as Revolutionary War Red Coats, she and her sister Maureen finessed their way into the sold-out party. By the end of the evening Eric and Colleen knew it was a forever love, and married in August 1999. Colleen was never one to dither on a decision, she would assess a situation and decide on the appropriate action on the spot. When it came time to make hard decisions for her treatments she did so with perseverance and determination; she never gave up. Combined with her mischievous sense of humor and engaging personality, Colleen was very effective in negotiation and problem solving. She was the one you always wanted to talk to at a party; interesting, charming, caring. Colleen's love of Boston Terriers led her to co-found the rescue group Boston Buddies and she would later team with a good friend to found The Dexter Foundation, a non-profit advocating for dogs left behind or suffering from abuse; she worked tirelessly to find loving, peaceful homes for countless animals. Visitors to her beautiful Redondo Beach home were always met by a barking chorus of the black & white pups. Colleen leaves behind devoted husband Eric, and siblings Christopher (Jean Marie), Terry, Maureen (Scott), Mark (Cecily), Patrick, and mother Dionne. Colleen, forever in our hearts, welcome to Heaven. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Dexter Foundation, 501 (c)(3), to honor Colleen's memory.
