Cynthia Ricklefs Mercer Obituary
June 15, 1929 - January 12, 2017 Cynthia Lyans Ricklefs Mercer passed away at the age of 87 following a decline in health and complications from a stroke in May 2012. Cynthia was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1929 and attended Fairfax HS and Stanford University (majoring in Mathematics). While working at the Rand Corporation, she married Robert J. Mercer on New Year's Eve 1952. She was an accomplished cook, the bookkeeper for several organizations, and interested in native plants and healthy eating long before it was popular. Cynthia was involved in all the schools her daughters attended and interested in the activities of her grandchildren. She was a master at crosswords and, as represented by all the books in the house, interested in cooking, science fiction, music, art, dance, sewing, weaving, native Americans, and archaeology. She was always up for a good gadget and any color as long as it was green. Numerous family trips included camping, with both children and grandchildren, trekking, and Elderhostel. She was a square dancer, supporting the local clubs and dancing in four countries and 10 states. She supported several local museums, public radio stations, environmental organizations, theatre and musical groups, the library, Stanford University, and organizations such as Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. Cynthia is survived by Robert, her husband of 64 years, daughters Lucinda and Annette, four grandchildren, and her sister, step sister, and step brother. A celebration of life will be held at a later time. If you would like to donate in her name, we suggest The Music Guild (www.themusicguild.org).
