Daniel Renberg Obituary

Daniel H. Renberg of Los Angeles, California businessman, financier, and philanthropist, died Monday morning, January 13, in Los Angeles after an extended illness. Mr. Renberg was 83. He is survived by his husband and partner of fifty-three years, Eugene Kapaloski. They were married in 2008 at Congregation Kol Ami, Los Angeles http://www.kol-ami.org. Born January 30, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Renberg was the son of Felix H. Renberg, M.D., and Hattie Arnstein Renberg. Mr. Renberg earned a BS degree in journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois in 1952 and his MBA from Harvard University in 1954. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Germany. He moved to Los Angeles in 1958 and worked as a stock broker before establishing Renberg Capital Management in 1964 in Beverly Hills. Mr. Renberg sold the business in 2005 but remained active in the financial industry until his death. Mr. Renberg was a committed philanthropist who supported a variety of activities and interests. He concentrated on institutions, organizations and activities which promoted and sustained the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. He was a major donor to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center http://laglc.convio.net. In 2010, he and Mr. Kapaloski were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) http://glsen.org. He established and supported the Daniel H. Renberg Fund at Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University http://www.medill.northwestern.edu/experience/msj/. He was at one time a major investor in the magazine, The Advocate, a prominent LGBT publication. Mr. Renberg also supported the US Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, and the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. He was also politically active and focused his assistance and activism on candidates and policies supporting LGBT equality. He was an active Democrat supporting the National Democratic Party, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and many individual candidates across the country who supported policies he believed in. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at 1 p.m., at the Renberg Theatre of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, in the Village at Ed Gould Plaza, 1125 N. McCadden Place, Los Angeles, Ca. 90038. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to any charity of choice.

I was so sorry to hear of the loss of Cousin Dan. I remember him so fondly when it would come by and visit our family when we were kids, some 50+ years ago. While we may have lost touch a bit in recent years, I always remember my older cousin who was so generous and thoughtful.
