David A. Maddux Obituary
January 27, 1933 - January 5, 2018 David A. Maddux, loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, passed away on January 5 after a brief illness. David lived on the Citrus golf course in La Quinta, California, where he and his beloved wife Denise made their home since his retirement in 2000. There, surrounded by friends, he enjoyed an active retirement that included daily recreation at the Citrus Club, travel, great food - often of his own creation - and good wine. His romance and friendship with Denise was the foundation of his true happiness and contentment. David was born in Artesia, California, on January 27, 1933, the only child of Enon and Verna. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and graduated from Excelsior Union High School. As an undergraduate at USC, he served as president of the business school. He remained an ardent and loyal Trojan supporter throughout his life. After graduating in 1954, David joined the US Army and served in Sendai, Japan, for two years. He made the most of his opportunity to travel extensively through Japan and learn basic Japanese. On return to the U.S., David attended USC Law School and began a lifelong devotion to and love of the law. He served as Managing Editor of the Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. After graduating in 1959, David joined the law firm of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter and Hampton, where he practiced for 40 years. He led the firm's labor and employment law practice where he developed a national reputation representing leading North American department stores and specialty retail chains. Together with his partners, he was instrumental in growing the firm beyond its Los Angeles base. A happy side benefit to opening the firm's San Francisco office in the 1970s was having clients introduce him to Napa and Sonoma wineries as they were emerging into international acclaim. Before moving to the Coachella Valley, David lived in San Marino and Pasadena for 39 years where he and his first wife, Georgiana Sutton, raised their three children. In addition to the law, food and wine, David's enthusiasms included flying glider planes, driving Porsches, restoring classic Mercedes Benz coupes and USC football. He is survived by Denise, his wife of 32 years, his three children (Mitchel, Merrit and Michelle) and seven grandchildren (Thomas, Timothy, Lynley, Anna, Melanie, David Reeve and Kathryn). Services will be held Friday, January 19th, at noon at St. Francis of Assisi, 47225 Washington St., La Quinta, 92253. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the following organizations in memory of David Maddux: USC Gould School of Law - Dean's Strategic Fund in care of USC Gould School of Law, Development & Graduate Relations 1149 South Hill Street, Suite 340, Los Angeles, CA 90015 or online at gould.usc.edu/giving.
