Dr. David Joseph Bleiberg Obituary
December 31, 1929 - October 10, 2017 David Bleiberg passed away on October 10, 2017 at the Santa Monica home of his son and daughter-in-law, Daniel Bleiberg and Darcie Miller. The cause was Parkinson's disease. David was born and raised in New York City, and he graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and New York University. He got his DDS degree from the University of Pennsylvania. It was in Philadelphia that he met his wife, Leona Rosenwald, on a blind date. They were happily and passionately married for 50 years. She predeceased him. David and Leona moved to Los Angeles in 1958, with their eight-month-old daughter Laura. He set up his practice in Santa Monica and was well-known and respected as an outstanding dentist, a craftsman of the mouth. He always had a radio turned to classical music in his office, and he loved to talk to his patients and tell jokes to put them at ease. He was a volunteer dentist at what is now the UCLA Venice Dental Center. David was an avid reader, especially nonfiction, and he loved biographies, histories and science. He collected stamps, specializing in Swiss stamps, and also loved growing orchids. The family was longtime members of Sinai Temple in Westwood, where David belonged to the men's club. David was for many years a subscriber to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and was passionate about art. He painted in oils and watercolors and until recently was still taking a class at the Emeritus College. After he retired from dentistry, he was a docent for more than 15 years at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, giving tours for school children. He loved the camaraderie of the other docents, and he made close friends there, as he did throughout his life. The most important thing to David was his family, including his niece Debra Kaufman, and especially his five grandchildren, Sam, Alan and Celeste Bleiberg, and Simone and Ryan Rogers. Since the death of his wife, he had a loving and close companionship with Karol Wells, who shared her passion for sports with him, especially Ohio State football. They brought each other great happiness and took special care of one another, and enjoyed traveling abroad. Services will be held Sunday, October 15 at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary at 10 a.m. The family wishes to thank David's exacting, devoted and cheerful caregiver Emelita LoPresti, and those who assisted him at Belmont Village, including Mark, Arie and Yovanna. In lieu of flowers a donation made be made to the UCLA Venice Dental Center.
