Dennis Edward Hengen Obituary
June 10, 1943 - January 18, 2018 Dennis Edward Hengen, age 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at his home in Torrance, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Honolulu, HI, to Dr. Henry Edward and Grace Hengen on June 10th, 1943. Dennis grew up in Bridgeton, MO, and attended college at Kirksville Teachers College in Kirksville, MO. While still in college he met the love of his life Judy (Oliver) in a chance encounter at a local church. Before completing college Dennis was drafted into the Army and served two years as a medic in Vietnam. After returning, Dennis and Judy moved to Southern California where he went on to complete his bachelor's degree at Long Beach State University. He and Judy settled down in Torrance where they raised their family and lived happily for almost 50 years. Dennis was a man of immense energy and diverse interests which lead him to three distinct careers over the span of his life: as a pharmaceutical sales executive; as an entrepreneur founding a western line dancing magazine, a club, a D.J. business, and touring internationally as an entertainer and dance instructor; and finally his true calling, as a much loved, inspiring and highly entertaining 5th grade teacher. He loved movies and books, music and concerts, theatre, traveling, camping, sports, a good cocktail, telling stories, and sarcasm. But more than any of these things, he relished cooking for, entertaining, and spending time with his family and large circle of dear friends. He was a man that truly loved people, and loved life. He will be immeasurably missed by his family and all who knew him. Dennis is survived by his wife, Judy and 2 children, Katie Culp (Robin), Jennifer Lucich (Nelo). He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Bailey and Chase Lucich, and Jack and Madison Culp. He was preceded in death by his parents and has 3 surviving siblings, Phil Hengen (Mary), Mary Grebenkemper (John), and Dena O'Malley (Kevin). A viewing will be held on Sunday, January 21st at Rice Mortuary in Torrance from 2 - 6PM. The funeral ceremony will take place at St. Lawrence Martyr Church in Redondo Beach at 11AM on Monday with a celebration of life immediately following at the Hengen's home in Torrance.
