Dolores Yvonne Fitchman Obituary
February 29, 1928 - February 7, 2017 Dolores Yvonne Fitchman, 88, passed away quietly at home surrounded by her beloved friends and her two dogs on February 7th, 2017. She was a lifelong resident of Los Angles and Oxnard Shores. Her parents were Grace Edwards and Walter Eli Fitchman. Dolores attended UCLA and graduated with a Bachelor's and Master's degrees. She began her teaching career in Lynwood, CA, then to Long Beach and finally home to Beverly Hills. Education was her passion and and she became an unforgettable and well-respected administrator. Growing up in Hollywood where her dad worked for several of the major movie studios, it stands to reason that Dolores would become a starlet. In fact, she did star with Shirley Temple in many of her movies such as the Good Ship Lollipop. Dolores had her SAG card for many years. She was rediscovered by a director at the age of 16 while on vacation with her parents in Las Vegas. She tried acting school but that was where it stopped for her. Dolores preferred regular school and wanted a college education. Dolores devoted her life to the education of children as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal and then principal. She led her school, El Rodeo, to become a California Distinguished School. Ironically, instead of starring in movies and TV roles, she chose the role of educating the Hollywood stars' children such as Debbie Reynolds' Carrie and Todd Fischer, Nancy Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Angelina Jolie. 30 years later, she retired to pursue other interests dear to her heart--the welfare of animals. She was active as a docent for many years at the Santa Barbara Zoo where she also served on the Board of Directors. She was awarded woman of the year award. She also served on the Board of Directors for the National Police Dog Foundation. She was a benefactor to numerous animal groups and zoos such as Best Friends Animal Society, CARL, Los Angeles Zoo, San Diego Zoo, National Police Dog Foundation, Jane Goodall Institute, the World Wildlife Foundation, ASPCA and many horse and donkey rescue groups. She was an active member in her local Oxnard Shores community; serving on the neighborhood council. Dolores is survived by her next of kin Letty Lou Thornton. Memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 32, Trinity, TX 75862-0031 or Los Angeles Zoo, 5333 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90027.
