Don Pewthers Obituary
August 8, 1936 - September 18, 2015 Don passed away after a short illness on Friday September 18 in Newport Beach. Don was born in Eureka, California but was raised in Fresno where his family moved during World War II. Don attended Fresno High School where he was active in Boys Federation and won awards for his outstanding football play. His prowess on the football field enabled him to attend Stanford University on a football scholarship. He was injured in an automobile accident before his junior year at Stanford. This curtailed his football career but he went on to become a black belt in judo and was instrumental in starting the first judo group at Stanford. Upon graduation from Stanford in 1958, Don was hired by New York Life Insurance Company. He worked for New York life both as an agent and manager in Palo Alto and San Mateo. After moving to Newport Beach, Don continued his career as an independent agent. Don was Stanford's greatest football fan and had not missed a home game since he was being recruited in 1953. His tailgates and presence at "Gate 12" were legendary and remembered for the great fun and comradery they afforded everyone. Don was indeed "larger than life" and a friend described him as "Don always gave more than he got". A true description and tribute to a person we will all miss. Don is survived by Carole, his wife of 15 years, his daughter Cathleen (Mark) and grandchildren Heidi and David as well as his stepdaughter Patricia and step grandchild Chris. Remembrances may be made in his memory to the Buck/Cardinal Athletic Fund at Stanford University 641 E. Campus Drive, Stanford, CA 94305.
