Donald Zonshine Obituary
Our beloved Donald passed away peacefully on August 28th after a valiant but brief struggle against a cancerous brain tumor. Don was born April 23, 1927 to Minnie and Henry Zonshine. He was raised in Burbank, California, attending elementary, middle and high school there. Don had a desire to pursue a career in architecture, but ended up overseeing the family businesses, Henry's Bar and Henry's Liquor. He later opened two cocktail lounges, The Buccaneer and The Cavalier, before developing a very successful real estate career with childhood friend Howard Tanner. Don married May Boss in 1950 and shortly thereafter adopted her son Clay. Some years later, Don married Dixie Lee Singer. Dixie's two children, Janet and Steve, became his children. Later, Janet married Steve Galletly. Don became a grandfather when Jan and Steve blessed him with two wonderful boys, Nicholas and Alexander. Sadly, Dixie passed away 12 years ago after 35 years of marriage. Years later, Don was introduced to Joanne Geller. She became his life partner and friend, along with her loving family. Don and Joanne shared nearly six years together, traveling on special occasions with family. Their many trips together and interesting cultural events enhanced their lives. Don had many wonderful achievements in his life: spending years in the Boy Scouts, developing innovative bar and restaurant strategies and successfully developing several real estate properties. But most notably, Don was an extremely charitable and generous man. He was a very giving, loving and supportive man who will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and being a part of his life. Don is survived by his sister Shirley (Stu), brother Robert (Betty), nephews Michael (Rachel) and David, niece Sheri (Brook), great nephews Hunter and Zachary, daughter Janet (Steve), grandsons Nicholas and Alexander, son Clay, granddaughter Natalie, Joanne Geller and family, cousin Meredith (Andrew) and numerous cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2:00 PM, at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to City of Hope, in the memory of Donald and Dixie Zonshine.
