Her work focused on defining and advocating for the recognition of nursing's appropriate place in academia and the delivery of health care. Over the next 16 years she and Dick had three children and relocated 7 times for Dick's work. In that time she worked as a mom, volunteer, community activist, nurse, university teacher, and graduate student working on her MS in Nursing. In 1967, the family moved to Santa Monica, CA, where Donna completed her MSN through UC San Francisco and earned her MS ('69) and PhD ('73) in Sociology from UCLA.
