Dorothy Gorman Obituary
Dorothy was born to Adeline & Bruno Costanzo in New York. She was the youngest of 5 children and grew up in New York. She skipped a year in high school & went to work as a mathematician in an oil company. She then came to California in 1952 where she worked for Carnation, in Los Angeles. She was working there when she met Bob Gorman. On their first date she showed Bob her office, which was located in the basement. It was air conditioned to support large vacuum tubes which ran a large punch card IBM computer. She controlled the payroll of all of the personnel in Carnation. She said the only reason she worked there was that a dish of ice cream was only 8 cents. Bob was in rockets at Douglas Aircraft so he got her a job there at Douglas and said they would get a computer shortly. She worked there for over a year & Douglas did not buy a computer, so Dorothy went to Rocketdyne, in Canoga Park, as they had just bought an IBM computer. Dorothy worked for the General Manager, Dieter Huzel, who ran the V-2 rocket factory in Peenemunde, Germany in World War 2. Dorothy bought a 1946 souped up Chevy, which she used to go across the mountain three times a week to UCLA. Bob & Dorothy were married in Riverside, in 1958, where she taught school. She never turned on a personal computer as she said, " If you don't use your own programs then you don't enjoy using a computer." Bob & Dorothy moved to Lomita in 1972 where she helped to refurbish a house where they lived for the last 45 years. A funeral service will be held at the Historic Church of Green Hills at 10:30am on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.
