Obituary Condolences

Dorothy Lank of West Los Angeles died late Monday night, August 10, after a sudden and brief illness. Her age remains a guarded secret. She was born in Montreal to Louis and Zysa Shlachter, who had immigrated from Poland. She married Gerald Walter Lank and they immigrated to Southern California in the late 1950s, living in Pomona, Diamond Bar and Claremont before Los Angeles. Dorothy worked as a teacher in Canada; a volunteer at Planned Parenthood and a volunteer coordinator at the Red Cross in Pomona; a manager at the Neighborhood Justice Center in Los Angeles (now The Center for Civic Mediation), and a mediator for the City of West Hollywood. She earned a BA from Antioch University, Los Angeles, in Social Administration. After retirement, she remained active as a volunteer, including at homes for the aged and the Skirball Cultural Center. She was also, throughout her lifetime, an avid and highly skilled bridge player and perfect-pitch alto in the HaSharim choir of Temple Isaiah of Los Angeles. In addition to her husband Gerald, she is survived by her children Sharon Lank (married to Michael Cardinal) and Barry Lank; her sister Tobie Posel (Jack) and brother Ralph Shlachter; her sister-in-law Edith Lank; her nieces, nephews, grandnephews and grandnieces. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 12 at Hillside Memorial Park, where she is now entombed. Donations in her name may be made to The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.
