Duc Xuan Nguyen Obituary
October 28, 1941 - November 5, 2017 The Rev. Dr. Duc Xuan Nguyen died from a heart attack on November 5, 2017 in Ho Chi Minh City amidst a nationwide celebration of the 500-year anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Nguyen is the third son out of eight siblings, born of one of the first Vietnamese Evangelical pastors. He made many contributions to the Vietnamese community: resettling Vietnamese refugees in the US with Church World Services at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA (1975); naming the Vietnamese-American commercial district "Little Saigon", CA (1979); being ordained the first Vietnamese Anglican priest (1984); working with Robert Funseth of the US State Department to free Vietnamese pastors held in prison (1988); translating Rick Warren's "The Purpose-Driven Life" and "The Purpose-Driven Church" to Vietnamese; working with the United Bible Society and the Catholic Church to print Bibles inside Vietnam; training Vietnamese church leaders, and promoting unity among all denominations. Nguyen is survived by his wife Thuan, three children: Daniel, Samuel, and Elizabeth, and four grandchildren. Services will be held on Saturday November 18, 2017, 10 AM at Garden Grove United Methodist Church, 12741 Main St. Interment to follow at Rose Hills Mortuary in Whittier.
