HON, MD, Edward H. 89, Scientist, Inventor and Physician. Edward H. Hon, MD, a pioneer in the field of electronic fetal heartrate monitoring, died November 6 at his home in Bradbury, California. He was 89 years old. He lived for many years in Southern California with his wife Audrey, former council member and mayor of Bradbury. Dr. Hon, son of immigrant shopkeepers, was born in China and raised in Australia. He immigrated to the United States in 1945 to study medicine at Loma Linda Medical School. After graduating first in his class at Loma Linda, Dr. Hon completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency and fellowship at Yale University Medical Center. It was at Yale that he initiated ground-breaking work that would lead to the development of practical electronic fetal monitoring. Dr. Hon authored more than 150 scholarly papers and received numerous academic awards including the Distinguished Service Award of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, membership in the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Los Angeles Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. Dr. Hon served on the faculty of the Yale, Loma Linda, USC and Drew Medical Schools. Dr. Hon was preceded in death by his wife Audrey and is survived by his children Shirley Hon, of La Canada; Robert Hon, of Los Altos; and Ted Hon, of Kamuela, Hawaii; his sisters Merle Hon, Ora Mee Lee, Hona Hon, June Long and Jill Wong of Australia; and six grandchildren. Services will be held at Oakdale Mortuary, 1401 S. Grand Ave., Glendora, CA 91740, Ph-(626) 691-2000 with a Visitation Monday, November 13th, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. A Chapel service will be held Monday, November 13th, at 11:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Oakdale.
