Edward W. Malphus

Obituary Condolences

September 18, 1950 - August 3, 2015 Dr. Edward W. Malphus passed away at his home in Santa Monica on Monday Aug. 3. Born on Sept. 19, 1950 in Miami, Florida, to Roy and Hilda Malphus, he earned a B.S. in biology from Loyola University in New Orleans and his M.D. from the University of South Florida College of Medicine and completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Nutrition and Gastroenterology at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. For more than 30 years he was in private practice in Santa Monica, where many of his current patients are children of his first generation of patients. He was Chairman of Pediatrics at St. John's Hospital from 1994-2000. Helping the neediest was a central tenet of both his professional and personal life. Beginning with an internship at Martin Luther King, Jr. General Hospital in 1975, he continued to serve the inner city community throughout his career. He was President of Mission Doctors Association, a Catholic agency providing health care in Africa and Latin America, and provided care in Cameroon in 2011. He was a year-round ocean swimmer who joked about bonding with dolphins in Santa Monica Bay, a koi fancier, and a skillful and devoted gardener. A devoted Catholic, he sought deeper spiritual awareness through private study and monastic retreats. Dr. Malphus is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Lou; his mother, Hilda; his brothers Bill (Becky) of Florida and Bob (Barbara) of Carson City; and many friends. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Monica's Catholic Church, 725 California Ave, Santa Monica, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 11. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Mission Doctors Association, 213-368-1872, 3435 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 1940, Los Angeles, CA 90010.
