Eileen Miggins Hoppenthal Obituary
February 8, 1927 - August 30, 2017 Eileen Miggins Hoppenthal of Laguna Hills, CA, passed away peacefully at home on August 30, 2017, with loved ones holding her. Her struggle with cancer was brief. Eileen was born on February 8, 1927, in the Bronx, New York, the fourth of five children and only daughter of Irish immigrants John James and Johanna Sullivan ("Josie") Miggins. Her Catholic faith and Irish heritage defined her character, personality, and life's work. The Miggins home was filled with fervent prayer, good meals, lively company, song and dance, service to neighbors, and shenanigans. To her last days, Eileen enjoyed a good story, a hearty laugh, song parodies, and reciting the rosary. In 1945, she graduated from Aquinas High School in the Bronx. Thereafter, she enrolled at Hunter College, and then followed her brother, Larry, to Houston, Texas, where she ultimately received her BS in nursing at Sacred Heart Dominican College. She worked as a missionary RN in Korea for 15 years, treating and ministering to the very poor and needy. This experience reinforced her faith, her innate compassion, and her generous spirit. After her return to the US, she earned a Master's in Nursing from UCLA in 1971, worked and taught in Spokane, WA, then returned to the LA area to work in hospital administration. The highlight of her life was meeting and marrying the incomparable Jake Hoppenthal in 1980. For 35 years, they built a beautiful life hosting friends and family, traveling, performing for friends, and caring for each other lovingly in their declining years. Jake predeceased her in 2015, and we take comfort in knowing they are now reunited. Also attending this festive reunion are Eileen's parents, her brothers Bobby, Jim, and John, her sisters-in-law Dorothy, Helen, and Rita, her nephews Rory and Larry Joe Miggins, her niece Jodi Miggins Criger, her beloved cousin Babs Sullivan Wolf, and the rest of Jake's family whom Eileen was prevented from meeting because of WWII. Eileen is survived by her remaining brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Kathleen Miggins of Houston, countless nieces and nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews, and friends worldwide. All services for Eileen Hoppenthal will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Calvary Mortuary Chapel, 4201 Whittier Boulevard, in LA. Visitation begins at 11:45 am, Mass will be offered at 12:45, followed by entombment and luncheon.
