Elaine Janice Winters

Obituary Condolences

July 4, 1925 - December 4, 2015 Elaine Winters passed away on December 4, 2015 at the age of 90. Elaine Winters dedicated her life to her family and to the families of the communities of West Los Angeles. Elaine's first entry into the world of community service began when, at 18 years of age, she joined the Red Cross Nurses' Aide Corps working in the Westwood Hospital during World Word II. After the war, she transferred her commitment to the newly opened Mount Sinai Hospital. In 1958 she along with her lifelong best friend Evelyn Feintech were instrumental in the beginnings and the continued establishing of Cheerful Helpers for Handicapped Children, one of the only programs in Los Angeles that addresses the needs of both special needs children and their families. Her decades long dedication to Cedars-Sinai began with the merger in 1976 when she became one of its first volunteers. She continued to serve in many capacities, including her involvement in the early days of the Sports Spectacular. She became a member of the Board of Governors in 1992 and in 1998 was elected Chair. In 2002 she was appointed as a Life Trustee. Elaine took special pride in the establishment of their Heart Families Volunteer Program. Her pioneering work in the support of heart patients and their families earned national recognition from the American Hospital Association and the Friends of Cardiology Nursing Association. Elaine also served on the committee of the California Medical Association which created the legislation that led to the Durable Power of Attorney Act in the State of California. It was subsequently adopted nationwide. Working hand-in-hand with her beloved husband Ben, with the deepest warmth and devotion, Elaine played an instrumental role in the evolution of both Cedars-Sinai and Stephen S. Wise Temple. Elaine was the wife and lifelong partner of Ben Winters. She was the daughter of Allen and Charlotte Rabin, and the kid sister of Bruce Rabin. She is survived lovingly and respectfully by her daughter Sherry and son John and his wife Debra, and by her grandchildren who were her pride and joy: Justin and his wife Sarah, Ryan, Kayla, Greg and Chelsea, and Lauren; her great-grandson Graham, and her beloved nephew Jay Greenberg. Funeral services will take place on Monday, December 7, 2015 at 10:00 am. at Hillside Memorial Park, 6001 West Centinela Avenue, Los Angeles. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to the Heart Families Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, 8700 Beverly Boulevard, Suite 2416, Los Angeles, California 90048.
