Eleanor Julia Harrington Obituary
December 27, 1917 - February 7, 2016 Eleanor Julia (Makley) Harrington died peacefully on February 7, 2016, in her daughter and son-in-law's home in Portland, Oregon. Eleanor was born in Lima, Ohio, along with her twin sister Ruth Marie, to Francis Joseph and Lilian Rose (Schwartz) Makley. Eleanor had a long, rich life. She grew up in Ohio along with Ruth and 3 younger siblings, Louise, Francis and Louis (all of whom have preceded her in death). In her twenties, Eleanor and Ruth moved to Southern California. The rest of her family soon followed. There she met her lifelong partner Eugene (Gene) Matthew Harrington. Gene and Eleanor were married in 1948 and started their family life together in the Los Feliz Hills area of Los Angeles where they lived until Gene's death in 2008 and Eleanor's move to Oregon in 2011. Gene was the founder and owner of Harrington Tools, Inc., and Eleanor supported him in the family business throughout her life. Gene and Eleanor raised three children, Christina, Michelle, and Eugene Michael. Eleanor was a highly talented artist. She studied with Leon Franks and her oil paintings include portraits, landscapes and still lifes. She also used her artistic skills to create Christmas ornaments, painted eggs, and other items for fund-raising for the Assistance League of Los Angeles, and her children's school events. She supported many local charitable organizations, including St. Anne's Home and the Mission Doctors Assn, and the Los Angeles County Art Museum. Eleanor loved to travel and relished her trips with Gene to Europe, Africa, and Asia, as well as travel throughout the US visiting family and meeting up with friends. In her 40's she became an avid golfer and continued to play with Gene and friends into her 80's. Eleanor's passion was her family. She was generous in her love and support. She is survived by her 3 children, Christina (Portland, OR), Michelle (Las Vegas, NV) and Eugene Michael (Los Angeles, CA), and grandchildren, Thomas and Caitlin. A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held in Portland, OR, on Sunday, March 13. A mass will be offered for her on Saturday, March 12, at 6 pm at St. Casimir's Church, Los Angeles, her parish church for over 50 years. Donations in Eleanor's memory may be sent to St. Anne's (http://www.stannes.org/) or Alzheimer's Foundation of America (http://www.alzfdn.org/).
