Elizabeth Hines Martin Obituary
September 18, 1919 - April 4, 2016 Elizabeth Hines Martin passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, April 4, 2016 under the care of the Carmelite Sisters of Alhambra at Santa Teresita. She was 96 years old. Born on September 18, 1919 in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Betty Jane attended the University of Illinois where she met her late husband John Edward Martin. They were married for 60 years. After moving to Los Angeles where Ed joined his father and brother Al in leading the second generation of the architecture and engineering firm Albert C. Martin & Associates, Betty became involved in many clubs and organizations; volunteering at the Pasadena Symphony, the Pasadena Art Museum and the Huntington Library as a docent, president of the Junior League of Pasadena, Pro America, and San Marino Women's Republican Club, member of the Valley Hunt Club, the California Club, and a fundamental supporter of Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula. Betty and the Martin family were seminal figures in the development of Los Angeles, and their lives were entwined with the growth of the City and of the Southern California region. An avid equestrian, Betty rode for more than 25 years with local clubs, including Flintridge Riding Club and West Hills Hunt Club, where she also served as poet laureate. A lover of the arts, she played piano all her life, performing in her home and later at Royal Oaks Manor. She also taught several of her grandchildren to play. She loved to dance, practicing ballet for many years. She enjoyed writing songs and stories, and painting water colors for her friends and family. She lived life to the fullest and captured her experiences through her songs and paintings. Betty Jane leaves behind five children: Nick Martin and his wife Judy of Pasadena, Peter Martin of La Cañada, Sally Reynolds and her husband Ray of Charleston, SC, Chris Martin and his wife Jeanette of San Marino and Lisa Ferguson of Lewistown, MT. She also leaves 15 adoring grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren (with two on the way!) In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula or the Carmelite Sisters in Alhambra.
