Elva Ezell Totton Obituary
September 6, 1914 - May 14, 2017 Mrs. Elva Ezell Totton was born to Malon and Emma Ezell in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, later moving to Muskogee. She attended Manual Training High School and diligently worked in Ezell Cleaners, the family business. She attended Langston University where she married Carl Totton on her birthday, Sept. 6, 1939. Moving to Los Angeles in 1941, they joined Bethel A.M.E. Church in 1943. Elva sang in the Cathedral choir, was PTA President for two years, a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Troop Leader, and an educator for the Compton school district for many years. On her one hundredth birthday she received certificates of recognition from President Barack Obama and the Los Angeles City Council for her many civic achievements. She was preceded in death by her husband and siblings Ellis, Hattie, and Russell. She leaves behind her son Dr. Carl Totton, daughter Deborah Washington, son-in-law Phillip Washington, granddaughter Kimberly Washington, cousin Rev. Dr. Marshan Fields of Kansas City, MI, sister-in-law Emma Ezell, other members of the Washington family: Espanolia, Barbara, Christine, and Marcus Washington, her longtime soul sister Allie Smith, and her devoted caregiver Ms. Natalie Garner. Services were held on May 25, 2017 in Los Angeles at Angelus-Rosedale Chapel and Cemetery. As the warm and loving matron of her family she will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all.
