1939 - 2015 Obituary Condolences
May 19, 1939 - July 8, 2015 Emil H. "Skip" Wohl peacefully passed away on July 8 in Mission Viejo, CA following an 11 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 76 years old. Skip was born on May 19, 1939 in Los Angeles, CA to Emil Roosevelt Wohl and Mary Horton Wohl. After graduating from Eagle Rock High School in 1957, he entered the University of Southern California, where he joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Science in Finance in 1962. In 1963, he married Jan Theodora Banks of La Jolla, CA at St. James-by-the-Sea in La Jolla. They lived in San Marino for 47 years, where they raised their two children, Emil John and Kirsten Catherine. Skip began his professional career with his father at Emil R. Wohl Construction in Los Angeles, where he began as a field superintendent and eventually worked his way to President in 1974. In the early 1980's, he transitioned the company's operations from general construction to real estate development, establishing Wohl Property Group. For the next three decades, he led the development of over five million square feet of industrial, office and retail properties throughout California. His professional affiliations included the Associated General Contractors of America, the Architectural Guild of the University of Southern California, NAIOP, and the Urban Land Institute. Skip enjoyed the early California tradition and camaraderie of trail riding, joining Los Caballeros in 1964, Los Borrachos Camp of Rancheros Vistadores in 1969, and El Viaje de Portola in 1981. He served as President of Los Caballeros from 1975-1976. He was a longtime member of the Jonathan Club of Los Angeles, the San Marino Tennis Foundation and the Valley Club of Pasadena. Skip is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Jan; his son Emil J. Wohl of San Diego and his spouse, Caroline Rentto Wohl; his daughter Kirsten Wohl of Guilford, CT; his grandchildren Caroline Wohl, Robert Wohl, Max Turbucz and Lucy Turbucz; and his brothers Greg Wohl of Corona del Mar, CA and Brad Wohl of Ramona, CA. His parents, Emil and Mary, preceded him in death. Private services are planned.
