Emilka "Bibs" De Vries Obituary
December 12, 1917 - May 23, 2015 Emilka "Bibs" De Vries, née Cuhel, originally of Cedar Rapids, IA, expired comfortably from natural causes at 97 years of age in Santa Rosa, CA. She is survived by her nephew, Russell L. Cuhel. Bibs led a life of life experiences. She was the first female accountant at United Airlines. During her prime she lived in Hollywood, CA where her fraternal twin brother Emil was a free-lance photographer. She was deeply involved in the underworld art community of Hollywood during its Golden Age. Bibs was an avid painter and sculptor, and made friends easily. She loved light jazz music and hosted many elegant cocktail parties. She enjoyed coastal sailing, developed a love of fast cars, and spoke Czech fluently. She followed her brother's relocations throughout the Northwest. She continued painting, crocheting, and gardening until her last days. Her friends have said that she was a pioneer for women in so many ways. Bibs wanted no services, and her ashes will honor her sailing history by being spread on the Pacific Ocean off Marina Del Rey. Remembrances may be made in her name to the The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids, IA.
