Emily Reeves Obituary
October 21, 1931 - August 20, 2017 Emily Louise Reeves died on August 20, 2017. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth Townsend of Washington DC, her husband of 63 years Emery Reeves, her sons John, Jim, Dave, and Bill, and grandsons Andy, Cam, Nick, Will, and Peter. Emily was also host mother in 1967 for AFS Luxemburg student Yves Germeaux. Emmy Lou was born in Hartford, CT, graduated valedictorian from Chaffee School in 1949 and Wellesley College in 1953. She married in 1954 and lived as a Navy bride at the Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, VA, for 3 years before coming to Southern California in 1958. She was a gifted athlete, tennis and skiing during college years, hiking, camping, and soccer coaching with her husband and her sons when they were growing up, and bicycle touring in her more senior years. Between 1985 and 2005, she bicycled over 50,000 miles including 2 trans America tours and across 49 of the 50 states plus tours of New Zealand and Holland. She was a serious volunteer, as a tour guide at Colonial Williamsburg during Navy years, president of the Cabrillo Marine Museum Volunteers in '79-'80, and a 30+ year docent with Los Serenos Point Vicente Interpretive Center. She volunteered as a guest nature teacher at several grade schools where the 3rd and 4th grade students loved being told about cowboy cologne, which plants were edible and getting a chance to feel fur and snakeskin, not to mention going on nature hikes and learning to identify local plants and rock types. Her patience and depth of knowledge as well as her neverending smile get kudos in her students' thank you notes.
